Matthew Sievers developed an early passion for expressing himself through art. He began studying at his father’s knee in his small hometown of Lewisville, Idaho. As the son of an accomplished artist, he was exposed to many different forms of art from a very young age. As a youth Matthew had a natural talent for drawing and loved sketching various figures and objects. As a professional artist he has developed a skill for mark making and a passion for color, composition and expression. “I approach a painting as a sculpture, ranging from smooth transparent blends to aggressive opaque texture, and everything in between. I try to limit brushwork until the end as I feel emotion soar in bold application and transparency.”
Matthew studied art at Brigham Young University Idaho and Utah State University. His courses enabled him to experiment with various media and subjects. He also has had the opportunity to study the art of different cultures while traveling in parts of Africa and Europe.
Matthew’s unique, recognizable style utilizes expressive brushwork, lying on top of these abstracted layers. “Building thin layers of paint over days creates such depth and carries opaque color into focus as it floats on top of the painting.”
Matthew has built a reputation for conveying light in unique ways that sets him apart from his contemporaries by using this approach. It is the common factor throughout his diverse subjects. Whether it’s a bustling city, a mountain storm or a serene landscape, Matthew merges traditional subjects with contemporary expression.
He has a studio in Phoenix, Arizona and Rigby, Idaho where he paints openly with patrons and students and invites all to join him in his creative process.
